reset Windows 10 with just a few clicks
When Windows stops working, it often only helps to reinstall. Under Windows 10, this is easier than ever! We’ll show you how to return to a fresh and working Windows.
Whether in the job, in love or on the PC: Sometimes a consistent new start is just fine. That’s even more true for Windows! If, after years of use, the system becomes so slow at some point that the workflow is no longer fun, it is time for a new installation. Even bluescreens , startup problems and other Windows bugs can only be remedied by the “back to top” solution in the worst case scenario .
What was previously associated with a lot of effort, is done quickly in the current Windows 10 ! Microsoft has given the system a handy reset function. With this you can reset Windows with a few mouse clicks to the factory settings and can start with a fresh installation. You even have the choice of keeping your personal information or deleting everything.
Reset Windows 10: These are the advantages
Until Windows 7 it was necessary to delete the hard drive for a complete reinstallation and to start completely from zero. Furthermore, anyone who did not have the Windows DVD at hand (or worked on a laptop without a DVD drive) was also forced to create a USB data carrier and start from there.
Already with Windows 8.1 , Microsoft has integrated the reset function, which reduces this effort. Under Windows 10 it’s even easier. So you no longer need a separate boot medium for a new installation, such as a Windows DVD or a USB stick.
Another benefit: When you reset, the system automatically installs the latest version. In our example we reset a Windows 10, which has already received the two system upgrades released in November 2015 and summer 2016, such as the anniversary update after its original installation.
After the reinstallation, the system is still up to date with the last major update, only a few minor Microsoft patches need to be installed via a Windows update. The miserably long update marathon, especially under Windows 7, is therefore unnecessary, which saves time and nerves.
The third major advantage over classic reinstallation is the already mentioned ability to keep your own files such as documents or your music. Although we still recommend a backup, in practice, the option but a workload.
Here’s how: Reset Windows 10
But enough of the preface, let’s start!
1- Preparing to Reset Windows 10
Before you reset your PC, you should make some preparations. Regardless of your chosen recovery method, we recommend that you back up all important files such as personal documents, photos, videos, etc. to an external hard drive or online storage. Also, make sure you can reinstall all the important programs after you refresh your Windows system.
This is especially true for purchase programs: Make sure you have the necessary registration codes, passwords, and (if necessary) installation media for programs such as Office, Photoshop, and Co. at hand. Regardless of the variant chosen below, Windows deletes ALL programs that were not installed as an app via the Windows Store. So make sure you can reinstall them.
2- Reset Windows 10 Initiate
Everything Backed Up? Then off for that! You will find the options for refreshing the PC in the settings of Windows 10. Call it up via the Start menu and navigate to the point ” Update and Security “.
Then change over to the submenu ” Restore ” via the menu on the left side . Here you will find the item ” Reset this PC “. Click on ” Let’s go ” to start the refresh process.
3- Select the desired reset option
Windows 10 now offers two options for resetting the system: you can choose to keep your own files and Windows 10 apps or delete all files from the PC. We explain the consequences of the two variants.
4- Option 1: Keep your own files
If you choose this option, Windows 10 only deletes the installed programs when refreshing and resets the system settings. Personal files, but also some “harmless” settings such as the selected wallpaper are preserved.
If you decide to do so, the system will create a list of all programs that you need to reinstall after refreshing. The list can be found after successfully restoring Windows 10 as a text file on the desktop. Windows Store apps and games are automatically re-downloaded and installed after refreshing.
5- Option 2: Completely delete the PC
If you choose the ” Remove All ” option , this is exactly what happens: Windows deletes all files, programs and Windows apps from the PC and reinstalls the system in a completely virgin state. Here, your PC will be reset to factory settings.
Do you want to sell your PC or laptop? Then in the next step you should select the option ” Remove files and clean up drive “. Windows 10 does not simply delete the files from the hard disk, but overwrites them several times. This makes it virtually impossible to recover the deleted files. However, this process can take several hours, depending on the size of the hard disk. Keep the PC, choose the much faster option ” Remove data only “.
6- Windows 10 reset
Regardless of the option selected, Windows 10 now summarizes all changes again. That’s your last chance to stop the operation – so make sure you’ve made all the arrangements. After clicking on ” Reset ” Windows 10 restarts and performs a fresh installation according to the selected specifications.
Note: This process takes about as long as a “real” installation of Windows 10. If you have not decided to clean up the hard disk, you can work on fast PCs after just 20 minutes with a fresh and error-free Windows 10 continue ,
Alternative: Reset Windows 10 using the Microsoft Media Creation Tool
In our experience, refreshing Windows 10 through the native feature works well and reliably.
If there are still problems with the reset, there is an alternative way: Use the free Microsoft Media Creation Tool . The program is actually intended to create a current boot medium of Windows 10. In the current version, it also offers the possibility to reset an existing Windows 10 installation.
Download the program and start it on the PC you want to reset. Accept the license terms and in the next step click on ” Run now Upgrade for this PC “. By clicking on ” Next “, the program starts the download of the current version of Windows 10. Once this is completed, the Windows 10 setup starts automatically. Here the item ” Choose what you want to keep ” appears before the installation .
You have three options: With ” Keep personal files and apps “, Windows will only be installed over the existing installation. If you want to carry out the described options for resetting, select either ” Retain personal files only ” or ” None “. These points correspond to the options described above. If you are satisfied with the selection, continue the installation with ” Next “. In this way, you can comfortably reset Windows 10 to the factory settings .
